Kanchay games use a shooter marble to hit other marbles or reach a target. There is no single rulebook for every family version. Here is a small circle game you can teach quickly: knock target marbles out, count them, then return every marble to its owner when the game ends.

What you need

  • Choose an even patch of ground where the marbles roll predictably and cannot disappear into drains. Set the circle on a surface you are allowed to mark. A cord can replace chalk if it lies flat and nobody walks across it.
  • Use visibly different shooters if you have them. Inspect glass for chips and cracks. Keep a container nearby for captured targets so they cannot roll under someone's feet while the next player takes a shot.

Setup

  1. For this house format, place twelve shared target marbles loosely near the centre of a circle about one metre across. Those quantities are suggested starting values, not tournament dimensions. Increase the circle only when the group can shoot comfortably.
  2. Give each player one shooter and choose the turn order with a toss. Agree that all targets are loans: scoring a marble does not transfer its ownership. Take a quick count of each person's equipment before mixing anything together.
  3. Our starter rule gives one shot per turn, taken from any point outside the circle. Pick up your shooter after every shot. This is easier to learn than versions that leave shooters in play and add extra-turn rules.

How to play

  1. Choose a place outside the boundary and settle your shooting hand. A common technique uses a bent finger and thumb to flick the shooter; practise gently away from the scoring circle first.
  2. Aim at a target near the edge. Release one shooter along the ground without moving the hand forward to shove it. If it slips before you intended, use one agreed practice restart for each beginner, then count later slips as shots.
  3. Wait until all marbles stop. Any target resting completely outside the circle counts for the shooter. A marble touching the boundary stays in. Check this before anyone picks up a target.
  4. Collect the targets you scored and retrieve your shooter. Leave all other targets where they finished, even if they moved away from the centre. The next player chooses a shooting position and takes one turn.
  5. Continue until every target has left the circle, then count each pile. If a shot sends a target into an unreachable place, stop and retrieve it safely; do not keep playing while someone is inside the shooting area.

Scoring / how to win

  • Each target knocked fully out is one point. For example, three marbles leave on one shot and another remains on the line: record three, not four. The person with the largest total wins that round.
  • If two players tie, share the win or use a fresh three-target tie-break with equal turns. Do not award the match to whoever grabs a loose marble first. The captured piles should add up to your starting target count.

House rules & regional variations

  • Extra shot after a successful hit is an optional house rule. Say whether the next shot starts outside the circle or from where the shooter stopped; those choices make very different games.
  • Hole-target kanchay is another family of games. It needs its own rule about reaching the hole, striking opponents and finishing. Treat it as a separate game rather than importing just one useful rule mid-round.

Tips & strategy

  • A shorter controlled shot often leaves fewer arguments than a powerful scatter. Start with a target close to the boundary and think about the angle that will send it out.
  • Use one caller to check boundary marbles before collecting. For a mixed-skill game, let beginners shoot closer for an agreed practice round, then reset everyone to the same line for a scored match.

Safety & fair play

  • Marbles are small choking hazards. Keep them away from babies, younger children who put objects in their mouths and pets. Never throw or shoot toward a face, person, window or vehicle. Everyone waits behind the player taking the shot.

Questions before the first round

Do players keep the marbles they win?

Not in this guide. Count them as points, then return the equipment. Never assume another child's marbles are a prize.

Does the shooter count as a target?

No. Retrieve it after the shot in our starter format. Targets and shooters have different jobs.

Does a marble on the line count?

Our house rule says it must be completely outside. Agree this before the first shot.

Is this the official Ringer tournament game?

No. Ringer has its own equipment, circle and turn rules. This is a smaller family circle format inspired by the same aiming idea.

Can we play with fewer than twelve targets?

Yes. Use an agreed number, record it and give everyone the same turn rules. Our numbers are setup suggestions.
