Zero Kata: Tic Tac Toe with a Kite and Chai
Also called: Zero Kata · kata zero · katam zero · kat zero · tic tac toe.
The paper game you can draw in a few seconds now has a smiling patang and a little cup of chai. Zero Kata keeps the familiar three-by-three board: take turns, spot a line, and block one before your opponent finishes it. Start at Level 1 against the chai bot, or pass one phone between two players. Winning a round raises the bot level, up to Level 3. A match lasts up to five rounds, with a clear score between them. There is no timer and no need to rush your move.
How to play Zero Kata
The kite takes the first move of the opening round. Tap an empty square to place your mark. The chai cup takes the next turn. Marks stay where they are, and a filled square cannot be chosen again. Three matching marks in a horizontal line, vertical line or full corner-to-corner diagonal win the round immediately.
If all nine squares fill without a line, the round is a draw. Each player gets half a match point. A win gives one point to the winner. Choose Next round when you are ready; the starting player alternates so the kite does not always move first. The match ends after five rounds, or earlier when the trailing player cannot catch up.
Three bot levels or a friend
The chai bot starts at Level 1, mixing strong moves with room to practise. Win a round to move up a level: Level 2 makes fewer mistakes, and Level 3 checks every continuation. You can choose a starting level in table settings. Against Level 3, a carefully played draw is a good result. The bot gets no extra turns or hidden marks.
Two-player mode uses the same screen and the same rules. The scoreboard tells you whose turn it is. Pass the phone when the turn changes and let the other player choose their own square. These are local matches, not live online matchmaking or a ranked competition. Pick the mode before starting a fresh match.
A useful order for your next move
First, look for a line you can finish right now. If there is none, check whether your opponent has two marks with an empty third square. Block that threat before making a longer plan. A corner, centre or side square can be right depending on the position; blindly choosing the middle on every turn is not a strategy.
A fork creates two different winning lines at once. Because the opponent usually places only one mark, blocking one line can leave the other open. Watch for that possibility on both sides. After a lost round, look at the final board before continuing. The winning line stays visible so you can see which earlier square would have changed it.
Play with a keyboard or on paper
Left and Right move the highlight through the legal squares. Space places the selected mark, and also starts the next round after the round result. On a phone, tap the square directly. The pause and sound controls work as they do in the other chai.games games. Reduced-motion preferences keep the marks still while preserving the turn and result feedback.
For an offline version, draw two horizontal and two vertical lines on a sheet of paper. Use X and O, or draw small kites and cups. The Khel Kitab Zero Kata guide includes setup, a worked fork example, house variations and a printable rule card. Agree whether you want one quick round or the same five-round scoring before you begin.

Questions before your next round
How hard is the chai bot?
The default Level 1 leaves room to win while you learn. Winning a round raises the level, up to Level 3, where perfect play means the bot will win or draw.
Why did the match end before five rounds?
A match ends early when one player leads by more points than remain available. Three straight wins, for example, decide the match.
Does a draw use one of the five rounds?
Yes. A drawn round counts and awards half a point to each player. Five drawn rounds finish 2.5-2.5.
Can two people play together?
Yes. Choose two-player mode and take turns on one device. Remote online play is not part of Zero Kata.
Does the difficulty rise during a match?
Yes. A human round win raises the bot level by one, up to Level 3. Draws and bot wins keep the current level. Each fresh match starts at your selected level.
