What you need

  • Give each player a sheet with Name, Place, Animal, Thing and Total columns. Add a small letter column at the left if you plan several rounds. Leave enough space to read the answer after the timer stops.
  • You can use one phone for the letter and timer while keeping answers on paper. A visible timer avoids disputes about who said stop first. Ages and round lengths here are suggestions for a casual session, not competition requirements.

Setup

  1. Agree the language and spelling system. An English-letter round uses written initials; an Urdu round uses the chosen Urdu letter. Mixing a Roman spelling in one column with an Urdu initial in another needs a separate agreement before play.
  2. Define the categories. Our starter version accepts a person's given name, a real named place, a real animal and a physical object. Decide whether fictional names, brands or animal breeds count; do not decide only after seeing a rival's answer.
  3. Choose a round length, such as ninety seconds, or use first-finished-stop. We suggest the timer for mixed ages. Pick a letter with a random draw or a caller, then remove it from the pool so the same easy letter does not repeat immediately.

How to play

  1. Say the letter clearly and show it to everyone. Begin the timer only when all players have their paper ready. Each player works privately and writes one answer in each category.
  2. Start with whichever category comes easily. For an M practice round, possible entries include Maryam, Multan, mongoose and mug. These are teaching examples; players still need their own answers in a scored round.
  3. Stop writing at the buzzer. If using a first-finished call instead, the whole group stops at that call, including the person who made it. Do not add a missing letter while the answers are being read.
  4. Read one category at a time and check validity before comparing duplicates. Names that differ only because of a minor spelling variation refer to the same answer in our version. Say this clearly for Roman Urdu transliterations.
  5. Award the agreed points, add each player's four categories and write the total. Settle any challenge before choosing the next letter. At the end of the planned rounds, add the totals; the highest score wins.

Scoring / how to win

  • Our 10/5/0 system: ten for a valid answer no one else used, five for a valid answer shared by at least one other player, and zero for an invalid answer or blank. Every matching player gets five; the first person reading it does not get ten.
  • Example: Sara has three unique answers and shares “Multan” with Ali. She scores 10+5+10+10=35. If Ali also has a blank animal cell, that cell scores zero. Duplicates are checked within the same category, not across different columns.

House rules & regional variations

  • For young writers, play in pairs or allow spoken answers recorded by a helper. Keep the same helper rule for the whole group. You can also use only Name and Animal for a first round, then add more columns later.
  • Food, city, sport or profession can replace a category. A “Pakistan cities” round is a narrower house version than a general Place round. Announce the narrower category before choosing the letter, and choose letters that offer reasonable answers.

Tips & strategy

  • An unusual answer is useful only if you can explain it. Keep a dictionary or agreed reference available for checking after the timer, not for searching during it. If you cannot settle a genuinely unclear answer, replay that category or record the agreed ruling for next time.
  • For Roman Urdu, write a short spelling agreement such as “the same word stays a duplicate”. That prevents someone earning extra points by writing a familiar word with another vowel. Do not penalise a child's handwriting when the intended answer was already clear.

Safety & fair play

  • Keep examples age-appropriate and avoid collecting private information. A person's category answer can be a first name; nobody needs to write a classmate's phone number or address. Give slower writers a fair format instead of teasing them about speed.

Questions before the first round

What does 10/5/0 mean?

Ten for a unique valid answer, five for a duplicate valid answer, and zero for a blank or invalid one in this guide's house system.

Does a country count as a place?

Yes in our general Place category. If you want cities only, label the column Cities before the round.

Are different spellings unique answers?

Not when they mean the same name or word. Agree how transliterations and obvious spelling slips are handled before scoring.

Can we play in Urdu?

Yes. Use Urdu letters and agree how the written initial is checked. The same categories and scoring can still work.

What happens after a tie?

Share the win or play one extra round with the same timer. Do not invent a new tie-break after seeing who tied.
